Below are some frequently asked questions by volunteers. If you have any other questions, please reach out to us over email and we would be happy to answer them!
What can I expect to do as a volunteer?
Our volunteers often help to set up and close down recycling stations the start and finish of the event, supervise the stations throughout the event to ensure that the recyclables go in the correct bins, help to educate the event attendees and help to sort and weigh the recycling at the end of the event.
Are you a budding website designer or photographer or do you love to organize clean-ups and events? Please contact us with your suggestions as to how you can help us.
What should I bring to my volunteer shift?
Green Chair will provide a T-shirt during your volunteer shift but wear clothes that are okay to get a little messy and easy to clean. Dress according to the weather (that means sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen in the sun and rain jacket and extra socks in the rain or cold). Wear comfortable, practical shoes. Don’t forget your water bottle and working gloves (if you have some, otherwise Green Chair will happily provide gloves for you).
How do I get involved?

Where can I find out about volunteer opportunities?
See our
Event Calendar and our
Facebook page for our upcoming volunteer opportunities. Sign up is available on our website and don’t hesitate to
email us if you have any questions.
Can I bring a friend?
Of course you can! With more volunteers we are able to make an even bigger impact. Be sure to tell us that you are bringing a friend (or friends!) so that we can make sure we have enough food! Onsite sign up is available for most events.
Are refreshments provided or do I need to bring my own food?
Our volunteers are very important to us so we treat you well! If your shift covers a lunch (or dinner) we will provide you with a delicious, locally-sourced, organic meal. Please tell us if you have any dietary requirements or allergies so that we can ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Snacks and drinks will also be provided throughout the volunteer shifts. You will not go hungry.
I signed up for an event but haven't received any information.
Firstly, please check your emails (including your junk/spam folder) for an email from us with all of the event details. This email will typically be sent in the couple of days before an event when all of the information has been finalized.
If you haven’t received an email, apologies for this. We are probably madly organizing for our next event! Please contact us and we will respond with details of your shift as soon as possible.
Where do I check in for my first shift?
The time and location will vary depending on the event. If you are unsure where or when to meet please check your emails (including your junk) for an email with all the details. If you are still unsure please
contact us.
I can't do a full shift. What should I do?
Our volunteer shifts typically run for the whole event and range from 5 to 8 hours. Don’t worry if you can’t do a full shift. We would still love to have your help. Please
contact us to discuss when you can help. Please note that due to security and event access we cannot always accommodate people who would like to do partial shifts.
Where can I find a copy of the volunteer waiver form?
All volunteers must sign our volunteer waiver form. A link to the file is included in all of our event sign up forms and can be found by
clicking here.
Can I volunteer if I am under 19?
Yes. If you are 15 to 18, you need to submit a waiver signed by a parent or guardian before or at your first shift. Please let us know if you are 15 to 18 and we can send you a copy of the waiver so you can bring it to your first event.
And don’t worry, you can still volunteer if you are under 15, but you will need to have a parent or guardian with you. We often have volunteers under 15, some as young as 4! What a great way to positively influence your parents! If your parent or guardian can’t accompany you and you still want to volunteer, please contact us.
Are there any perks for volunteering?
YES!!!! Our volunteers are very precious to us and we pride ourselves in treating you well. We want you to have fun, make friends and be proud of being part of Green Chair. The volunteer work can be hard work (and smelly!) at times, but we go out of our way to make sure that you and all our volunteers are happy, having fun and are well looked after. We provide locally-sourced, organic lunches at our events. Plus you get access to some amazing events across Vancouver. We also organize (free) events for our volunteers including our annual Green Chair Recycling Appreciation party and award ceremony, BBQs, beach cleanups etc. Volunteer letters are provided at all of our events.
How do I get a volunteer letter?
All volunteers will receive a volunteer letter via email within 2 weeks of the event. Please check your emails (including your junk or trash folders). If you cannot find your letter please email
volunteers@gogreenchair.com with the event name, your full name and the hours that you volunteered. You
must sign out of the event with our Volunteer Coordinator and return your Green Chair t-shirt in order to get a volunteer letter.
How do I get a reference letter?
All volunteers will receive a volunteer letter for the hours that they have volunteered. In order for us to provide a reference letter for you we need to have had a bit of time to get to know you and your work. If you need a reference letter then we ask that you have volunteered for at least 30 hours with Green Chair. Please ask the Volunteer Coordinator at the event and follow up with an email request to
volunteers@gogreenchair.com.
